A blue wave. A blue-nami. A red wipeout.
Call it what you want, the message is deafening: On Tuesday, Democrats seized control of Congress in a massive rebuke of President Donald Trump, flipping seven Senate seats, 28 governors' mansions (and still counting), state legislatures, and statewide offices—including in areas of the country where Democratic victories had long been unthinkable.
As David Corn said in an election-night dispatch of Stress Test, "This is far beyond the good night Democrats were hoping for."
Some of the most stunning wins unfolded in Texas, where James Talarico won the most expensive Senate race in American history, ending 32 years of what seemed would be forever-Republican rule, and Gina Hinojosa won the state's governor's race for the first time since 1990. Georgia also made history with Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, who will become the first Black woman to serve as governor in the US. Let's not forget South Carolina, where Lindsey Graham's Trump-endorsed nepo-sister lost, and voters in the Palmetto state elected its first Democrat to the Senate since 1998.
And there's still so much more.
So I urge you to check out my colleague Daniel Moattar's terrific rundown of the night's headlining wins. As for what this means for the next two years, check out our roadmap for the brutal battle ahead.
