Could the end of Facebook be nigh? For the first time in its 18-year history, the social media network reported a drop in the number of daily active users. The decline sent Meta stocks tumbling a dramatic 26 percent as of Thursday, wiping out nearly $225 billion—yes billion—from the company's market value. Here at Mother Jones, we've written extensively on Facebook's outsize role in shepherding our current misinformation hellhole, while killing real news and targeting us in the process with its secretive algorithmic changes. It's also been accused of lying about removing hate speech from its platforms, potentially violating the law.
