It looks like the demise of Twitter could be on the horizon. But despite the cascading messes that have emerged since Elon Musk took over, jokes abound on the platform. And like the band aboard the Titanic, people are making memes until the website officially capsizes.
My colleague, Ali Breland, who's been documenting the tech billionaire's new ownership over the company, summed it up the best:
Elon Musk bought Twitter and Twitter makes people dislike Elon Musk. For once, the story of the stupidity of rich people—and how they got rich—is making sense to the masses. It just had to be written by the overlords themselves, in 280 characters or less.
But today, more mess. It looks like Musk's highly controversial new changes to Twitter's verification process have also been scrapped. According to reports, Twitter canceled its new Twitter Blue program, which had allowed anyone to make a verified account for $7.99 a month. As many predicted, users quickly created impersonations of official brands, celebrities, and politicians, making it next to impossible to distinguish real profiles from spoofs, We made a compilation of some of our favorite parodies here, if you want to check them out.
Ultimately, the lesson here is that rich white men are trying to ruin the Internet for the rest of us. But all the money in the world can't buy a sense of humor.
