Covid cases are still declining throughout the United States but in certain corners of the country, rates are starting to tick back up. This isn't to panic. After all, Dr. Fauci predicted this would happen a few weeks ago after eyeing the alarming trends in Europe.
Anecdotally, friends near and far are also testing positive. After attending my first wedding since the pandemic started and hanging in New York for a few days last week, several positive cases are suddenly popping up close to home. I've since placed myself in an extra cautious, self-imposed quarantine due to my unvaccinated roommate, a 6-month-old baby.
But this isn't to lament! I'm actually here to share some helpful tips in case you're in an area with rising rates:
If you're on Medicare, starting today you can now get up to eight Covid tests a month for free. This marks the first time Medicare has covered an over-the-counter test at no cost. And it's actually an easier process than private insurance. All you have to do is show your Medicare card to one of the many participating pharmacies—including Walgreens, CVS, and Costco—to collect a free test. Yep, that's way simpler than having to go through the private insurance reimbursement rodeo.
It's a lot easier to find antiviral pills. And in some communities, like New York City, you can get them delivered straight to your door for free. The Biden administration also recently launched Covid.gov to help people find the best spots to get the life-saving medications—which, according to a friend, helped reduce her symptoms right away.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the Biden administration could do a better job at communicating this info, especially since it could have a real, positive, and immediate impact on tons of people who are suddenly noticing a bunch of positives pop up.
Well, consider this your PSA, from yours truly.
