Mother Jones Daily Newsletter

June 16, 2023

Hey readers, this is Jeremy Schulman, an editor in the Mother Jones DC bureau.

I'm taking over the newsletter today because I have some exciting news to announce—and I wanted our subscribers to be the first to know.

After "an extensive search," I've been asked to join something called the "Republican Advisory Board." Yes, according to an email from the Republican National Committee, "only a handful of Republicans were asked" to participate in what they described in a later email as a "rare opportunity."

This is exciting stuff. But there are a few reasons to be skeptical. First of all, I'm not a Republican. I've also developed a bit of a mini-beat writing about ridiculous political fundraising emails.

Still, I'd like to be helpful, and that's where you come in: What advice would you give to the Republican Party right now? Please let me know.

I mean this in all sincerity. The GOP as an organization is in deep crisis. Donald Trump was just hit with serious felony charges—for the second time this year. Congressional right-wingers shut down the House floor as retribution for Kevin McCarthy's debt ceiling deal with Joe Biden. And North Carolina Republicans just censured a senator from their party for the crime of defending his constituents' marriages. In short, it's pretty clear that, for the good of the country, the RNC needs your advice.

So send me your suggestions for the Republican Party—serious, respectful suggestions only, please! I'll publish the best ones in a future newsletter. And maybe Ronna McDaniel will be inspired.

We need your help right now

There's no sugarcoating it: We face a real budget crunch and need to raise $390,000 in online donations by June 30 to finish our fiscal year break-even. We've already cut everything we can, and there is zero wiggle room to come up short. So we're hoping that donations from our regular newsletter readers, from you reading this blurb right now, will come in much stronger than normal to help us get there. Please pitch in if you can right now.
