Healdsburg Jazz is proud to broadcast this 1-hour music and spoken word performance inspired by and dedicated to the legacy of MLK and the music of the Civil Rights Movement. We are excited to do this in collaboration with the Stanford‘s King Research & Education Institute.
We are honored to feature the amazing vocalists Kim Nalley and Tiffany Austin, who have each championed freedom songs and black liberation music their entire careers. The performance includes such important songs as “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,” “I Wish I Knew How it Feels to be Free,” “I Woke up this Morning with My Mind Stayed on Freedom,” and more. Pianist Tammy Lynn Hall performs her original arrangement of “We Shall Overcome” and poet Enid Pickett performs her commissioned poem titled “118 Days,” about the Children’s March in 1963 in Birmingham Alabama. And Youth Poet Selma Asantewa Apara performs "On the Importance of Jazz." Other musicians include drummer Genius Wesley and bassist Marcus Shelby.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Through the Eyes of Children” was filmed at The Sound Room in Oakland, CA, by Northstarr Media Group, directed by Kevin Johnson.
